Without Richard Linklater‘s slice of life film Slacker, the independent film boom of the 1990s might not have happened. Unlike almost anything American audiences had seen before, it inspired a generation of filmmakers to go out and make their own movies. Kevin Smith often credits seeing the film at the Angelika Film Center in New York as his inspiration to make Clerks, the film’s success gave Linklater the ability to make Dazed and Confused and so much more. First released in 1991, Slacker celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and the Austin Film Society and the Alamo Drafthouse are teaming up for a remake.

In typical Austin and Drafthouse style, though, isn’t a by the book remake. There aren’t any big special effects or A-list actors. Instead, 23 Austin filmmakers will reshoot scenes using the same dialogue and locations from the original film and string them together as a meta-homage. Saoirse Ronan Starring in Film Based on Twilight Author’s ‘The Host’

You may not realize that Twilight author Stephenie Meyer wrote another novel that sounds far crazier than her sparkly vampire series, but The Host is exactly that novel. The 2008 tale seems like a riff on Heinlein’s The Puppet Masters (and several other stories) as it describes altruistic alien parasites called Souls (seriously) that attach themselves to host bodies — in this case humans — and then make their society all great and stuff. Imagine the monolith from 2001, but far more active, and you’re probably on the right track.

The book was optioned some time ago and has been developed as an indie with Stephenie Meyer offering a lot of input. Scripting is Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Now). He was once set to direct, and likely will in fact make the film. When he does, it looks like he’ll have Saoirse Ronan in the central role of a girl who rejects the probing tendrils of her own personal alien parasite. Read More »

Numerous cultures and religions throughout the span of history have lived their lives based on a zodiac calendar. Established because of the measurable and cyclical movement of the constellations in the sky at different points throughout the year, peoples assign varied names to a rotating number of time periods, either by the year or month. Some are named after animals, others the stars themselves. Now we have a zodiac of our own. Two friends have created The Geek Zodiac, a fun infographic that goes backwards in time and attempts to show the cyclical nature of science fiction, action and fantasy pop culture. ‘Terra Nova’ Trailer Offers Better Look at Series’ Old and New Worlds

Production on Steven Spielberg‘s time-traveling dinosaur series Terra Nova has been notoriously rocky, but the marketing campaign, at least, seems to be right on track. We’ve seen a few teasers already, and Fox has now released a one-minute trailer for the series. The new clip offers a better look at the future world the settlers are leaving behind, as well as some of the dangers that await them in their new prehistoric home. Watch it after the jump.

Marvel Considering Stand-Alone Films for Hawkeye and Black Widow

Between Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and X-Men: First Class, the upcoming season is already looking like the summer of Marvel. And between Spider-Man and The Avengers, next summer is looking pretty Marvel-heavy as well. But what of 2013 and beyond? What’s Marvel got planned beyond Iron Man 3?

Marvel Films co-chief Kevin Feige hinted in a recent interview at a few things that might be officially announced later in the summer. The juiciest bit of info? Marvel is seriously considering standalone features for Black Widow and Hawkeye (the characters played by Scarlett Johansson and the suddenly ubiquitous Jeremy Renner in the upcoming The Avengers film). The Paul Feig-directed Bridesmaids won’t be opening until next weekend, but it looks like Hollywood has already taken notice of the wedding-themed female-driven comedy’s mainstream appeal. Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott and Casey Wilson have just signed on for Bachelorette, an indie comedy produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay that sounds like it could be the next Bridesmaids. Paul W.S. Anderson Will Channel Roland Emmerich As He Directs Disaster Film ‘Pompeii’

From Roman Polanski to the other Paul Anderson? This may be only the second-biggest tragedy to strike the ancient city of Pompeii, but it is certainly the most recent. Four years ago, Roman Polanski planned to mount a massive historical epic based in Pompeii that would have culminated with the eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of the city. The script was to be based on the Robert Harris novel about Pompeii, but plans were dashed when SAG and WGA strikes loomed.

But other pitches about the city and its tragic, disastrous fate — totally unrelated to the scuttled Polanski film, aside from the basic setting — have circulated, and now Paul W.S. Anderson will make one that is positioned as a big disaster movie with a love story to keep us all emotionally engaged. Read More »


First Look: Rod Lurie’s Remake of Sam Peckinpah’s Harrowing ‘Straw Dogs’

When Hop came out last month, bringing James Marsden back into the public eye, I wondered one thing: where the hell is Straw Dogs? Rod Lurie scripted and directed a remake of Sam Peckinpah‘s polarizing film nearly two years ago, putting the movie into production in late 2009. Doing so attracted no small amount of negative attention, as the original film was one which sharply divided audiences but stands as one of Peckinpah’s most significant achievements. How does one make a new version, especially with James Marsden standing in for Dustin Hoffman? (No offense to James Marsden, but some simple truths must be faced, and one is that very few actors are equal to a young Dustin Hoffman.)

We’ve not seen any footage from Straw Dogs, and in fact we’ve had a peek at barely any materials at all. So here are some of the first real images from the movie. They’re not wildly exciting — neither will give you any idea of how Rod Lurie has actually handled the remake — but they serve to remind us that the movie does in fact exist. Read More »
